THE BIG BLUE FENCE

In partnership with Sanctuary Group, the Big Blue Fence project works with community groups in the Hackney E9 area to develop creative ideas with people living near the 2012 Olympic development site.

Can I Go Out?

In October 2007, Gainsborough Primary School Parents' Group invited writer Penny Cliff to run weekly after-school drama workshops in play-writing, devising and acting for parents and children. Can I Go Out? emerged out of the concerns of the participants and was developed through discussions and improvisations with those involved.

Can I Go Out? is a forum play - after the performance, the audience has the chance to respond to the story and to try out new ideas to resolve some of the issues raised.

The play reflects topics such as anxieties about street safety, the fear parents have for younger children and how older children may be ill-adapted to deal with greater independence as they move to secondary school.

Can I Go Out? first appeared at Gainsborough Primary School in May 2008 before touring to other schools in the E9 area and appearing at the Hackney Wick festival the following September.

The Big Blue Fence Interactive Installation

The Big Blue Fence Interactive Installation is a scale model based on a section of the Olympic site perimeter fence, conceived by Penny Cliff and designed by Pip Nash. The installation creates a focal point for participants to showcase and celebrate their work and gives visitors the opportunity to respond.

The Big Blue Fence Interactive Installation appeared at the Well Street Common 'Festival of Life' and Hackney Wick Festival in September 2008. Click here to visit the Hackney Wick Festival website.
