“Exposure 2012”, worked with 25 young people, at The Round Chapel in Clapton, to devise a play called ‘State of Anxiety’, over two weeks in August 2012. The play was a slightly futuristic interpretation of Shakespeare’s ‘Measure for Measure’ set in the near future “where justice has become privatised”.
The "Exposure" Summer project is linked to our Estate Based Youth Theatre programme. During the school terms, we run Free after school drama workshops on, currently, two estates for young people aged 8 – 19 years old. Exposure provides a two week programme open to young people, aged 11-19 from across Hackney, bringing our regular participants together and opening up the participation opportunity to other young people. The venue for the programme was The Round Chapel in Clapton which is near Hackney Central and on lots of bus routes. The programme aims to cut across postcodes, estates, ‘comfort zones’ and create a free open opportunity for young people who would not otherwise be able to access such opportunities. During the two weeks the young people work with arts professionals to develop their talents, new skills and devise performances for family, friends and local audiences.
A big component of the project are the Peer Facilitators whose role is to inspire and motivate young people to get involved in activities where they can express themselves, work with others and develop life and performing skills.

During the summer the Immediate Thetare young people from our Estate Based Youth Theatres were engaged in the Hackney One Carnival event which involved additional rehearsals and a parade as part of the Olympic Torch Relay. We were asked to lead the parade with a prologue to Hackney History. We devised a historical pageant highlighting iconic characters and events in Hackney’s history from The Romans up to the 1950’s and then followed this with parade participation of ethnic community groups from Hackney and Kinetika Bloco ‘Youth Street Band’.

“Diary of a Waster”
The first in our trilogy of shows on the theme of "Making Hackney Safer" was performed at The Bridge Academy on Wednesday 18th July at 6.30pm in the Performance Hall. Featuring thirty five young people this play explored the consequences of our actions and the importance to discuss, rather than repress concerns. We developed five dilemmas with groups of boys and girls emphasising that anyone of us can turn away from a rocky road and decide to take a more positive path with their lives.
A backdrop of animated cartoons added to the theatricality of the show and complemented the songs and dances created by the young people for this inspirational show.

Benefit and Pop Up Party

On Friday 17th February at The Arcola Tent in Dalston, Immediate Theatre celebrated sixteen years of working with young people in Hackney with an event which was both a fundraising benefit and their first ‘Pop Up Party’. The event featured 12 members of Immediate’s Advanced Youth Theatre group with a new show, ‘Get The Greedy’, written by playwright Jonathan Wright, based on real experiences from the young actors aged 15 to19 years old.
The play follows a teenage runaway in the seedy underbelly of Hackney, during her first twenty four hours of becoming homeless. Greedy capitalists were represented by the ‘shotters’(drug dealers). Themes raised were young people’s vulnerabilities on the street, relations with community police and the triumph of hope and family feeeling over adversity.
The evening began with a Dalston walkabout with giant puppets, which the young actors animated to the surprise and amusement of people on the streets. The puppets processed to the Arcola Tent, where the evening included live music from cool jazz fusion clarinettist, Arun Ghosh, and beautiful vocals by Ornella Hardie (a former Immediate Theatre trainee), plus high energy comedy from the hilarious Katherina Vrana. A fantastic hot Caribbean buffet by local favourites, Shades Caterers, was followed by sounds to dance the night away.
The joint purpose of the event was to promote the talents of the young people and also raise funds for Immediate Theatre’s work in schools and on estates in Hackney.
Artistic Director, Jo Carter says, “The activities we offer are designed to engage and inspire, promote understanding, confidence, respect and self discipline. We develop skills for employability and we offer properly paid work to those we train.
We want to make Hackney a better place to live for everyone, and we know that many people in the borough would like to see this too.”
The show was a huge success with audiences. Over 70% had not seen Immediate Theatre’s work before - but 100% rated the show as excellent, very good or good. “It’s good to see the youth doing something constructive with a message,” said one person. Other comments offered consistent praise: “The play was very engaging.” “Some strong standout performances.” “Obvious enthusiasm and energy!” “Immediate Theatre are an amazing company, working with our youth and engaging them positively.”
