We invited young people in Hackney to join our very own scrap yard challenge: create a theatre set and musical score for a performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ – using only scrap and recycled materials.
'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is one of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies where the boundaries between reality and imagination merge as characters are caught in a web of magic and enchantment.
The play was adapted and performed by members of our Estate Based Youth Theatres. Our 'Dream Makers' worked with 2009 Evening Standard Theatre Award winner Mamoru Iriguchi (Best Design, Mincemeat) to bring the world of the enchanted forest to life. At the end of the week the show was performed to an audience of family and friends.
See the gallery above for pictures of the final performance.

'Now You See Me; Now You Don't' is the story of an 11 year old boy called Aaron who is knocked down by a car coming home from school. This fully interactive workshop and production creates a lasting impact on the young people through a striking and dramatic central incident. The play focuses on themes of transition, encouraging young people to prepare themselves for secondary school and understand that they have increasing control over their own and other people's safety.
The interactive performance improves young people’s understanding of the fact that they have increasing control and influence over their own and other people's safety by:

Increasing knowledge about key road safety messages (the importance of being seen, making eye contact, being focussed)
Improving understanding of the different factors that converge in causing an ‘accident’
Improving young people’s preparation for secondary school and the longer journeys that face them as they get older.
Increasing young people’s confidence in their own decisions and making them aware that “it’s in a young person’s power to make safe decisions as actions on the road will either protect you or lead to damage.”
Making young people aware of the need to be alert to other people’s mistakes.
Making an impact on young people and preparing them for secondary school.

Developed with and for young people by Camden Public Safety Team and Immediate Theatre. Young people were involved throughout the creative process. Supported by Transport for London.
The play lasts approximately 1 hour 15 minutes, involving workshop elements throughout and can work with a maximum of 60 young people per performance. Pre and post show lesson plans are also available.

“I’ll… think about Aaron when I cross the road.”

“…it’s made me think more about how dangerous a road is.”

The project works with young people to:

Increase the development of social, personal and communication skills, giving the confidence to live active, healthy and positive lives.
Improve access to further training and careers in the arts by learning new skills in theatre.
Broaden perspectives by exploring issues pertinent to their lives in a positive and creative way.
Share ideas with local communities and decision makers, promoting social inclusion and positive relationships with the wider community and enabling participants to value themselves as citizens.
Reduce the risk of becoming involved in crime, drug misuse and early pregnancy by providing stimulating, creative and educational activities at high-risk times.

The Estate to Stage encompasses our Estate Based Youth Theatre and Interactions projects.
Our Estate Based Youth Theatres create a platform so that the voices of young people can be heard. This also helps improve relationships between the young people and the wider community.
‘Interactions’ provides opportunities for young people to develop life skills through the arts and signposts them on to positive destinations in education, employment and training.

Free-dom Kutz Condom Distribution Scheme

Hackney has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in London and there has been a dramatic rise in the rates of sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) amongst young people across the borough.
The Hackney Condom Distribution Scheme (CDS) has been running since 2005 and is coordinated by Brook London, operating under the Hackney & City Teaching Primary Care Trust.
As the Condom Distribution Scheme expands, we are working in partnership with Brook London to look for new and innovative ways of reaching groups of young people who may not access other services. We have been funded by the Hackney and City Teaching Primary Care Trust to run a distribution scheme in Barbers Shops.
The aim of Free-Dom Kutz is to contribute to the overall aims of the Free-Dom scheme of reducing teenage pregnancy and the prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Infections including HIV.
By working in barbershops across Hackney it is possible for young men to access to free condoms in places where they already go at a time that is convenient to them.
For all Easy Access Points (EAP's) in Hackney check out the ‘Where can I get condoms’ page on the Free-Dom website for all of the locations.
The service is confidential. Once a young person has met one of our trained advisors they’ll be given a card so that they can pick up condoms every week, wherever they see the ‘FREE-DOM’ logo.

Hackney Wick, London E9, is the area of Hackney closest to the 2012 Olympic site. The project originally got its name - the Big Blue Fence - because at the same time as Penny’s residency began, a huge barrier was erected along the 11 mile site perimeter, giving the area a startling new landmark. Workshops with young and old began, in schools, clubs and community centres, asking: What is it like to be living so close to the fence? What would you hear if you eavesdropped over the fence and listened in to what people say and think in E9? The debates about these questions took all kinds of creative forms - some groups wrote and performed plays (‘Can I Go Out?’ with Gainsborough Primary School Parents’ Group) and some people shared and recorded their life stories and experiences of living in Hackney from the past to the present (Tyssen House Residential Home, Morningside Estate Over 50’s Club).
After a year, the Big Blue Fence Interactive Installation was created as a showcase for this work. After brief showings in 2008, at Sanctuary’s Well Street Common Festival and the Hackney Wick Festival, we were given Heritage Lottery Funding to take the Installation to 3 Olympic boroughs, capturing how people notice change through their lives and exploring local shared heritage.
Meanwhile, back in Hackney Wick, our work in E9 continues as ‘Building Bridges’…
We have run after school drama clubs in local primary schools. At Gainsborough Primary School, we worked with year 5 and 6 pupils using drama to explore what it’s like to move on to secondary school. At Kingsmead Primary School we ran an after school drama club creating a play about journeys, looking at Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’.
Penny Cliff is currently working with The Good Companions and Concorde Youth Club. The Good Companions are a group of Kingsmead Estate older residents who have been part of the project since 2007. Their first play - The Secret Lives of the Jacksons – was performed in the Kabin at Christmas 2008. The group devised, wrote, rehearsed and performed it – this was their first ever piece of theatre. They enjoyed it so much they went on to create ‘3 Wishes, A Midsummer Comedy’, an intergenerational play performed in a tent on Daubeny Fields on a sunny Saturday afternoon in June 2009. A large audience watched the play, which showed the Good Companions emerging style - funny, gritty, energetic and optimistic. This was followed by a community barbecue and picnic.
It is great to be continuing our intergenerational work with Penny, the Good Companions and Stepping UP. We are currently developing ideas for a co-production with young people at Stepping UP Youth Club on Kingsmead Estate. This will result in a new play to be performed in spring 2010.

The Big Blue Fence Project works with communities in the areas of Hackney, Waltham Forest and Newham which border the 2012 London Olympic site - an area that is in the process of massive and long-lasting change.
The project gives people living next to the Olympic site the opportunity to record stories, develop creative ideas and express their views about living in the area and the changes that have taken place.
The Big Blue Fence Interactive Installation
The Big Blue Fence Interactive Installation is a scale model based on a section of the 2012 Olympic site fence and showcases the work of the Big Blue Fence Project. Changes that have taken place over the last 60 years are captured in stories, pictures and memorabilia. Within the installation, boxes can be opened to reveal fascinating insights into the past.
The Installation comes to Walthamstow Library in Waltham Forest following a successful residency in Hackney Museum where schools and communities helped to create exciting new work about the heritage of their borough.
For the duration of the project, workshops led by archivists, experts and artists will work with communities and schools to explore their rich heritage capturing change in stories, pictures and memorabila. These will then be displayed in the Big Blue Fence Installation.
Big Blue Fence Project Update…
We worked with Tiger Class (Year 4) pupils from George Mitchell Primary School in Leyton as part of a series of community workshops for the Big Blue Fence Project in Waltham Forest. The Trees Are Still Standing is a short film we created exploring the urban and rural landscapes of Waltham Forest seen through the eyes of young people - it follows the pupils on a visit to Epping Forest and features poetry written in response to their trip.Throughout January 2010, the film appeared daily on the BBC Big Screen in the heart of Walthamstow.
If you weren't able to catch it on the Big Screen, watch the video below!Recent additions to the Big Blue Fence Interactive Installation:Linford Road – The Story of a Walthamstow Family A fascinating glimpse into the life of a large family in Linford Road between 1940 and 1966. Hear about being bombed out from Stepney in the Blitz; working life; family outings; parties; celebrations; hop-picking in East Sussex and how it all came to an end when Linford Road was demolished.
Listen to The Linford Road Story here!Gone With The Wind – What Happened to the 19 Cinemas in Waltham Forest? There were once 19 cinemas in the borough, now there are none. The Good Life Club for the over-55’s and the Afro-Caribbean Elders Association have come together to contribute stories and reminiscences of cinema and theatre-going in Walthamstow, Leyton, Leytonstone, Chingford, and Hackney from the 1940s to the present.

Since 2004, Meet the Parents has trained over 30 young parents and has delivered sex and relationship education to more than 3000 students.
The project provides an opportunity for students to find out about the realities of young parenthood directly from those who have experienced it whilst reducing the risk of exclusion faced by young parents.
Training Young Parents
Young parents receive training to be peer-facilitators, giving them specific skills to lead workshops and knowledge of sexual health and relationship issues. Parents develop a toolkit of activities to explore teenage pregnancy using scripted material and drama techniques.
We run training courses for both young mothers and young fathers.
Workshops for Young People
Sessions are delivered to young people aged 13 to 19 (Year 9 and above) in schools and other youth settings. Workshops are delivered by trained young parents, up to the age of 25 who have undergone a 12 week training course to become peer educators. Workshops are designed to meet the specific needs of the group, ranging from a series of small sessions for young people with special needs to one off presentations for larger audiences.
Workshops can focus on the following topics

Parenting
Sex and relationships
Attitudes and values
Choices and decisions about sex and pregnancy
Contraception
Sexual health issues

Hackney and City's Teenage Pregnancy Partnership, of which Meet the Parents is a partner, won a prestigious national award at the 2008 Health and Social Care Awards. The award recognised the achievements of the partnership in achieving a dramatic fall in teenage conception rates of 28% since 1998 - more than double the national average.
Charmain Humphrey, our Meet the Parents Project Coordinator, was one of four nominees for the UK Sexual Health Professional of the Year at the Brook Sexual Health Awards 2009.
