Benefit and Pop Up Party

On Friday 17th February at The Arcola Tent in Dalston, Immediate Theatre celebrated sixteen years of working with young people in Hackney with an event which was both a fundraising benefit and their first ‘Pop Up Party’. The event featured 12 members of Immediate’s Advanced Youth Theatre group with a new show, ‘Get The Greedy’, written by playwright Jonathan Wright, based on real experiences from the young actors aged 15 to19 years old.
The play follows a teenage runaway in the seedy underbelly of Hackney, during her first twenty four hours of becoming homeless. Greedy capitalists were represented by the ‘shotters’(drug dealers). Themes raised were young people’s vulnerabilities on the street, relations with community police and the triumph of hope and family feeeling over adversity.
The evening began with a Dalston walkabout with giant puppets, which the young actors animated to the surprise and amusement of people on the streets. The puppets processed to the Arcola Tent, where the evening included live music from cool jazz fusion clarinettist, Arun Ghosh, and beautiful vocals by Ornella Hardie (a former Immediate Theatre trainee), plus high energy comedy from the hilarious Katherina Vrana. A fantastic hot Caribbean buffet by local favourites, Shades Caterers, was followed by sounds to dance the night away.
The joint purpose of the event was to promote the talents of the young people and also raise funds for Immediate Theatre’s work in schools and on estates in Hackney.
Artistic Director, Jo Carter says, “The activities we offer are designed to engage and inspire, promote understanding, confidence, respect and self discipline. We develop skills for employability and we offer properly paid work to those we train.
We want to make Hackney a better place to live for everyone, and we know that many people in the borough would like to see this too.”
The show was a huge success with audiences. Over 70% had not seen Immediate Theatre’s work before - but 100% rated the show as excellent, very good or good. “It’s good to see the youth doing something constructive with a message,” said one person. Other comments offered consistent praise: “The play was very engaging.” “Some strong standout performances.” “Obvious enthusiasm and energy!” “Immediate Theatre are an amazing company, working with our youth and engaging them positively.”

Participants are required to continue to attend their original project and to provide support and leadership to their peers.

Now well under way in central Hackney the Advanced Youth Theatre consists of up to twenty young people who will be working towards shows and developing new skills. Members will also have the opportunity to feed back into the company; creating new workshop packages or productions.

Chaz is a metre high rod puppet operated by five young people from Immediate Theatre’s ‘Youth Board’.
Chaz, a young visitor from another planet is here to learn about diverse and vibrant Hackney and will visit 15 community groups as part of an innovative performance project called the World in Hackney, from June 2011 until the 2012 Games. Chaz will entertain groups and ask two different questions:

What would your organisation/group like to contribute to the central cultural event in Hackney in July 2012 which will welcome the Games?

How does your organisation welcome strangers and newcomers, such as Chaz?

Chaz is collecting stories about welcoming strangers which will build into a major outdoor performance event which will be Hackney’s way of welcoming the world in 2012. Hackney Council’s 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Unit is working in partnership with Kinetika and Immediate Theatre on this innovative project. As part of this project we will involve 15 local organisations to help showcase Hackney’s diversityHow can you get involved?Chaz is happy to attend your community events, be part of youth group activities, meet with older groups, visit mother and toddler sessions, play games and lots more!
How can I arrange for Chaz to visit?
Contact Helen Goodsell at the Hackney 2012 Unit to set up the introductory visit with Ali Pretty, who will be able to answer your questions and make a plan that suits you.

So far, groups she has met have welcomed her in a whole range of ways; sharing stories, inviting her to take part in their regular activities, welcoming her with song and dance performances or making something that represents themselves.
Chaz will be accompanied by Ali Pretty and/or Tony Gouveia, Immediate Theatre’s Associate Director and five young people.
They will introduce Chaz and themselves and invite the group to share their stories and experience of welcoming strangers.
Chaz will then spend some time meeting individuals and sharing ideas about how the group can continue to get involved in activities leading up to the Olympics. The length of the visit will depend on your groups usual session time .

A group of sixteen young Hackney actors from Immediate Theatre, aged 13 to 21, performed their newly devised play ‘Frenzy!’ in Dalston,
The play was a Forum Theatre show which got members of the audience up on stage to improvise alternative strategies characters could have used , in order to change the endings for the better. The Forum style worked a treat and Frenzy engaged the audience of youth groups, family, friends and representatives from local organisations”
The actors presented two stories about individuals caught up in the rioting and looting. Sarah’s story which followed a young woman who was prevented from going out on the streets by her parents but ended up in trouble after taking a gift of stolen goods from a friend and Brian’s story following an unemployed teenager who took part in the looting. Brian’s story led to the biggest debates as members of the audience tried different strategies to find him a job, resist peer pressure and develop a better relationship with his family.
The individual stories were presented in front of a backdrop of scenes of rioting and looting. As one member of the audience put it “the emphasis was on expression, reflection and listening, not on answers”. The main reaction from the audience was to acknowledge the many different factors underlying why people got involved in the rioting, beyond the main catalyst of Mark Duggan’s death .
