'Now You See Me; Now You Don't' is the story of an 11 year old boy called Aaron who is knocked down by a car coming home from school. This fully interactive workshop and production creates a lasting impact on the young people through a striking and dramatic central incident. The play focuses on themes of transition, encouraging young people to prepare themselves for secondary school and understand that they have increasing control over their own and other people's safety.
The interactive performance improves young people’s understanding of the fact that they have increasing control and influence over their own and other people's safety by:

Increasing knowledge about key road safety messages (the importance of being seen, making eye contact, being focussed)
Improving understanding of the different factors that converge in causing an ‘accident’
Improving young people’s preparation for secondary school and the longer journeys that face them as they get older.
Increasing young people’s confidence in their own decisions and making them aware that “it’s in a young person’s power to make safe decisions as actions on the road will either protect you or lead to damage.”
Making young people aware of the need to be alert to other people’s mistakes.
Making an impact on young people and preparing them for secondary school.

Developed with and for young people by Camden Public Safety Team and Immediate Theatre. Young people were involved throughout the creative process. Supported by Transport for London.
The play lasts approximately 1 hour 15 minutes, involving workshop elements throughout and can work with a maximum of 60 young people per performance. Pre and post show lesson plans are also available.

“I’ll… think about Aaron when I cross the road.”
Yr 6 Pupil

“…it’s made me think more about how dangerous a road is.”

“Excellent – all the children had grasped this important message…”

A play exploring health and wellbeing issues for KS3 ages 11 – 13
Written by Jamie BeddardDirected by Rob Watt
Produced byFace Front Inclusive TheatreImmediate Theatre
Follow the lives of Lydia, Jonah and Sarah as they discover more about who they are, where they belong, and what makes them unique. How do they balance trying to assert their individuality with the pressures to conform? What impact do their decisions have on their health and wellbeing? Where can they go if they need help? From the classroom to home to the virtual world of the web, join our characters as they attempt to make sense of their lives as they enter into adolescence.
How does Beat Them/Join Them? support work in the classroom?
Combined with teaching resources and training, ‘Beat Them/Join Them?’ helps teachers address sensitive and complex issues such as relationships, physical and emotional health, self-esteem and transition, in an accessible, creative and safe way.
It is an integral part of PSHE and supports and develops SEAL, as well as meeting Secondary School aims and Every Child Matters.

“The play showed me that peer pressure is harder to get out of than I thought”

Teacher endorsements

"Following a suggestion from Mike Davis (PSHE/Citizenship and Participation Manager Children and Young People's Service - Haringey Professional Development Centre), and seeing a snipet of the play at an anti-bullying conference, I booked the play as I felt it would give pupils something to think about and give a different slant on PSHE topics.
We all enjoyed the show, pupils were also amazed that some of he actors had disabilities and did their parts so well. It also made them aware and appreciative of differences. Pupils enjoyed the fact that they were given an opportunity to take part in the production and have a say in the outcome.
As teachers the pre and post show lessons were helpful to reinforce pupil learning and they are lessons we could adapt and use again. The issues were well communicated and pupils were able to assess friendships, peer pressure and bullying issues, making wise choices etc.
I would encourage teachers in other schools to book this play. I will be happy to have it back for another year group."
Louanne Sampson, Teacher, John Loughborough School.

"I booked the show because we have a history of seeing excellent performances by Face Front. Our students were fascinated by the show and each took something from it.
The issues in the production were communicated very well indeed - the approach was clear and even our non-verbal students had an idea of the issues being raised. Theatre is an excellent medium for discussing and developing issues and inclusive theatre even more so!
I would recommend the show to other teachers for its direction/issue raising and inclusivity."

Woodberry Down estate off the Seven Sisters Road will soon be seeing lots of dancing in the streets as Immediate Theatre launches the Well London ‘Creative Community’ programme. Multi-cultural dance workshops, arts and crafts, street theatre, performances and carnival processions will all be on offer to the Woodberry Down community, young and old, as part of Well London.
Residents, parents and children will be able to access free creative events at the Robin Redmond Resource Centre and St Olave’s Church Hall. This will start with a community arts day on Saturday 29th May. This will be followed by arts, dance, and theatre workshops during the half-term week leading to an arts trail around the Woodberry Down Estate on 5th June.
Last year, Immediate Theatre received support from Arts Council England and Well London to produce a week of events at the Robin Redmond Resource Centre and Parkside Youth Club, which included a spectacular street parade led by the AfroReggae Bigga Blocco youth band.
This year is set to be bigger and bolder with opportunities for people to get involved in arts and crafts activities, explore different cultures through dance, get active and dress up the neighbourhood.
L’EST projects will be working with visual artists and community participants to decorate the estate and create a stimulating arts trail. Dance companies and artists are still being confirmed but for the most recent information you can contact Tony Gouveia.

Immediate Theatre, in partnership with Fairbridge, has recently been awarded funding to run the 'Tomorrow?' programme, training young people in Hackney to become peer facilitators. This will provide them with essential skills and put them on a positive career path.
The 'Tomorrow?' programme offers:

Personal and social development training
Skills development in facilitation and drama
The opportunity to design a creative toolkit exploring issues around youth crime, gang culture and knife crime
The opportunity of a paid position with Immediate Theatre
A gold youth arts award or appropriate qualification for each trainee peer facilitator

The 'Tomorrow?' programme is a positive approach towards crime reduction in Hackney. The programme will engage with nearly 500 young people, with 20 events over the next year, including performances and follow-up events where issues highlighted in the productions can be explored further.
The 'Tomorrow?' programme builds on Immediate Theatre’s success of working with young people at risk of social exclusion or at risk of committing crime, which has been a key success of our ‘Interactions’ project.

In the February half-term, young people in Hackney were invited to join our very own scrap yard challenge: create a theatre set and musical score for a performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ – using only scrap and recycled materials.
'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is one of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies where the boundaries between reality and imagination merge as characters are caught in a web of magic and enchantment.
The play was adapted and performed by members of our Estate Based Youth Theatres. Our 'Dream Makers' worked with 2009 Evening Standard Theatre Award winner Mamoru Iriguchi (Best Design, Mincemeat) and Hoxton Hall graffiti artists to bring the world of the enchanted forest to life. At the end of the week the show was performed to an audience of participants’ family and friends.
See the gallery above for pictures of the final performance.

Increase the development of social, personal and communication skills, giving the confidence to live active, healthy and positive lives.
Improve access to further training and careers in the arts by learning new skills in theatre.
Broaden perspectives by exploring issues pertinent to their lives in a positive and creative way.
Share ideas with local communities and decision makers, promoting social inclusion and positive relationships with the wider community and enabling participants to value themselves as citizens.
Reduce the risk of becoming involved in crime, drug misuse and early pregnancy by providing stimulating, creative and educational activities at high-risk times.

The Estate to Stage encompasses our Estate Based Youth Theatre and Interactions projects.
Our Estate Based Youth Theatres create a platform so that the voices of young people can be heard. This also helps improve relationships between the young people and the wider community.
‘Interactions’ provides opportunities for young people to develop life skills through the arts and signposts them on to positive destinations in education, employment and training.
