The Architect’s Big Idea

Details

  • 1997

The Architect’s Big Idea was originally created in 1997 in partnership with Hackney Council Housing Department. The aim of the project was to engage residents of specific housing estates in the decision making process relating to the stock transfer of their homes from Hackney Council to other social landlords

Six characters were created through workshop programmes with local residents, these characters brought to life some of the changes that had taken place on the estate in the past and explored the current changes. The characters: the architect, the oldest Woman in the world, the child minder, the caretaker, the rag and bone man and the child played out a number of scenarios around the estate to attract people to attend consultation sessions at local community halls. The Architect who was on stilts was a very pompous character who had had some extreme ideas for the local area provoking debate and laughter from the crowd.

The figure of the architect working with one other character continued to be used by Hackney council and in subsequent years by the Architecture Foundation to attract residents in Hackney and Tower Hamlets to take part in consultation exercises and provoke debate about design.
