“Culture is our weapon”

Afro Reggae is a cultural group that was established in the Favela (shantytown) of Vigario Geral, Brazil in 1993. They work within the most at risk communities in Rio de Janeiro and are dedicated to transforming the lives of young people through engagement in the arts, providing pathways into employment and hope for a better future for their communities.

Following a successful "mini- project" in Shoreditch, from 2006 to 2008 we worked in partnership with the AfroReggae UK Partnership, Shoreditch Trust and Taru to continue this work using Brazilian arts, drama and mediation techniques to engage young people. Weekly sessions took place at Hoxton Hall and Blue Hut in Hackney.
