INTERACTIONS

The Interactions programme is an innovative and highly successful arts programme that has been operating in Hackney for the past 6 years. The project offers local drama-based arts opportunities for excluded and hard-to-reach young people (13-19) and signposts them to positive destinations (e.g. education, employment or training).

Activities help users gain increased self-confidence, communication and arts skills (characterisation, image based work etc.) that lay the foundations for future progression. Positive outcomes are achieved by working in partnership with other local youth work providers and ensuring that good pastoral support is available for the young people alongside quality arts activities. Work focuses on subjects that are of direct relevance to the young people's lives and that encourage them to explore and question the society in which they live.

We use a formalised mentoring scheme that helps track the young people's progress, provide a point of contact if any problems arise and help to signpost young people to appropriate local services. Young People also have the opportunity to receive Arts Award accreditation and other recorded outcomes while on the project.

"... I have gained so much confidence...now I feel I can do anything" Carmon, Interactions Participant

In July 2008, Interactions presented CocoButta: A Grime Musical at BSix Sixth Form College. Grease goes grime; the story of girls, gangs and high school was relocated to Hackney to the thriving and defining sound of East London. Both performances were a sell-out.
