5 Boroughs Youth Theatre Festival
We will be taking part in the first ever 5 Boroughs Youth Theatre Festival on Sunday March 28th at Stratford Circus in Newham, bringing together young people aged 11 – 19 from across the 5 Olympic boroughs.
Our Woodberry Down Youth Theatre have created a new musical which they will perform about the life and times of Mary Secole.
Born Mary Jane Grant in Kingston, Jamaica 1805, the black nurse known as Mary Secole was a legend during the Crimean war of the 1850s. Renowned for riding onto the battlefields to treat the British injured and wounded, Mary was the forces “sweetheart” of her day. After the war she found herself broke and bankrupt. In 1857, a fundraising gala, in her honour, attracted 80,000 people to the Royal Surrey Gardens.
Our Woodberry Down Youth Theatre meet on Thursday evenings at the Robin Redmond Resource Centre between 5.30 – 7pm.
Other participating youth theatres in the festival include: Theatre Royal Stratford East, Theatre Venture, Half Moon Young People’s Theatre, Greenwich and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre and Norlington Boys School.
The festival will take place from 12 – 6pm with performances and group workshops allowing young people across the 5 boroughs to share and celebrate their creative work. The festival has been organised by participating groups as a ‘work in progress’ with plans to develop the event over the coming years into a London wide, and possibly international, youth theatre festival.
Please note: the festival is only open to participating groups and there will no public performances.
